Students Using Handhelds

Here are pictures of the Creative Writing class using Palm handheld computers. The students’ faces have been blurred for safety and security reasons.
While the class is in a lab, not all computers are working. The handhelds make the student-computer ratio for the class 1:1.
Handhelds are great for group work. Here the students discuss, beam, and create a quiz on their handhelds.
The students also use the handhelds with desktop computers. Here they are researching on internet-capable computers and writing notes in their handhelds.
I also allow the students to use my MacBook since there are not enough internet-capable desktop computers in the class.
For Journal Entry #18, the students assessed their use of the handhelds. Here are what Jaydylee and Daniel have to say:
My experience with the handhelds was really cool. I have never seen a handheld in person so the first time I saw it, I was so amaze. The interesting aspects about the handheld is that it has a touch screen. You can also use a keyboard for typing. The keyboard is kinda hard to use because it’s smaller than a regular one. I think using the handhelds is better than writing with a pencil. The handhelds also have games in it that are educational and most importantly fun. The handhelds are very useful. Read on
Using these hand helds is such a privilege. I wish that all the other students could use this wonderful device. It makes L.A. much more fun. This could change the teaching of L.A. as we know it. And make it more enjoyable. Students would actually look forward to learning language arts. I know I do and that is a good thing. Students looking forward to learning is every teacher’s dream. It would make life a lot more pleasant and wonderful. So basically this is a good thing for students to have. It would make education such an activity that students would beg their parents to make them go to school even when they’re sick. This would just make things better for everyone. Too bad we don’t have enough money to get them for at least even half of the student body. Read on
